Stomach tube may do more harm than good in bowel blockages, major trial to find out
NCT ID NCT07574515
First seen May 13, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether placing a nasogastric tube (a tube through the nose into the stomach) actually helps or harms people with a small bowel obstruction. About 1000 adults who do not need immediate surgery will be randomly assigned to either get the tube or not. The goal is to see if avoiding the tube leads to fewer lung problems like pneumonia or the need for intensive care.
