Could a simple implant replace the morning-after pill?
NCT ID NCT06162611
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a contraceptive implant placed on the same day as unprotected sex can prevent pregnancy as effectively as the implant plus an emergency contraception pill. About 790 women aged 18-35 will be randomly assigned to get either the implant alone or the implant with a levonorgestrel pill (like Plan B). The goal is to see if the implant alone is a reliable option for emergency contraception while also providing long-term birth control.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
etonogestrel implant and levonorgestrel pill
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new, long-acting emergency contraception option that works immediately and lasts for years.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial, but it's still testing whether the implant alone is effective enough. Results may vary by body weight, and the implant does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
