Could a simple saline test replace CT scans for lung clots?
NCT ID NCT07190079
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares a new, radiation-free bedside test using saline contrast and electrical impedance tomography (EIT) against standard CT scans (CTPA) for diagnosing acute pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). Researchers will enroll 343 patients with suspected or confirmed PE to see if the EIT method can accurately detect clots. If it works, it could offer a safer, quicker option for diagnosis, especially for patients who cannot undergo CT scans.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
saline contrast
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safer, bedside diagnostic tool for acute pulmonary embolism, reducing reliance on radiation-based CTPA.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study, not a treatment trial. The new method may not match CTPA accuracy, and results may not apply to all patients.
