New stem cell approach aims to treat tough anemia cases
NCT ID NCT05757310
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial tests a new way to do a stem cell transplant for people with severe aplastic anemia whose disease has come back or not improved with standard treatments. The approach uses a milder conditioning regimen and removes certain immune cells from the donor cells to reduce side effects. The study will enroll 6 participants to see if the procedure is safe and feasible.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
stem cell transplant with drugs to suppress the immune system (cyclophosphamide, pentostatin, anti-thymocyte globulin)
What this could lead to
If this works, it could offer a new treatment option for people with severe aplastic anemia who have not responded to standard therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small phase 1 trial with only 6 participants. The main goal is safety, not effectiveness. There are risks of infection, graft-versus-host disease, and other serious side effects.
