New citrate dialysis method could reduce bleeding risks for critically ill patients

NCT ID NCT03842657

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study tested a new method to prevent blood clots in the dialysis machine without using heparin, a blood thinner that can increase bleeding risk. The approach uses a special calcium-free fluid with citrate and replaces calcium separately. The study included 97 critically ill patients who needed dialysis and had a moderate to high risk of bleeding. The goal was to see if this method works better than using a special dialysis filter that is designed to reduce clotting.
