New blood treatment aims to protect kidneys during risky heart surgeries

NCT ID NCT03459287

Summary

This study tested a new system for preparing donated red blood cells before transfusion. It compared the new system to standard blood preparation in patients undergoing complex heart surgery who were likely to need a blood transfusion. The main goal was to see if the new system was as safe and effective, particularly in reducing the risk of kidney problems after surgery.
