Can a simple habit tracker help prevent SIDS?
NCT ID NCT07779512
First seen Aug 21, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether adding a daily habit tracker to a brief safe sleep education video helps caregivers of infants up to 4 months old stick to recommended safe sleep practices, like placing babies on their backs and using a crib without soft bedding. Half of the caregivers will watch the video and receive a handout, while the other half will also track their baby's sleep habits daily for four weeks. The goal is to see if the habit tracker improves adherence to all four key safe sleep guidelines, which could lower the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Safe sleep education video plus a daily habit tracking form
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could give hospitals a simple, low-cost tool to help families consistently follow safe sleep guidelines, potentially reducing sleep-related infant deaths.
- What could go wrong
- The study is relatively small and relies on caregivers reporting their own behavior, which may not reflect real-world adherence. The habit tracker may not provide lasting improvement beyond the four-week study period.
