Precision radiation takes on liver cancer: could SABR beat standard care?

NCT ID NCT07628751

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares a precise radiation technique called SABR against standard treatments (like heat probes or chemo injections) for early-stage liver cancer. About 218 adults with a single tumor up to 8 cm will be randomly assigned to SABR or standard care. The main goal is to see if SABR better prevents the cancer from growing back in the treated area over two years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR)

What this could lead to

If SABR works better, it could become a new standard, non-invasive treatment option for early liver cancer, potentially improving local control and survival.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 2 trial with 218 participants, so results are still early. SABR may not prove superior to standard care, and side effects from radiation are possible.
