Can a brain zap boost therapy for borderline personality disorder?
NCT ID NCT06259851
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study combines a type of brain stimulation called rTMS with dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to see if it helps people with borderline personality disorder more than therapy alone. Sixty participants will receive both treatments over several months. Researchers will measure changes in symptoms like impulsivity, emotional regulation, depression, and anxiety.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more effective way to manage borderline personality disorder symptoms, reducing impulsivity and emotional suffering.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and the added benefit of rTMS over DBT alone is uncertain.
