New nasal spray vaccine for RSV shows promise in young children
NCT ID NCT05687279
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a live, weakened RSV vaccine given as a nasal spray to infants and toddlers aged 6 to 24 months in Puerto Rico. The main goal was to see if the vaccine virus spreads from vaccinated children to others in the same household or daycare, and to check how long the virus is shed. Researchers also looked at the vaccine's safety and how well it triggers an immune response. The study included 80 healthy children and compared the vaccine to a placebo.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- live attenuated respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine given as a nasal spray
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a safe RSV vaccine for infants that does not spread to others, helping protect young children from severe RSV disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-phase study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to larger populations. The vaccine virus might still spread or cause side effects.
