New hope for a rare, scarring disease: Head-to-Head drug trial

Summary

This study is testing which of two powerful drugs is better at controlling severe mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), a rare autoimmune disease that causes painful blisters and scarring on moist body surfaces like the eyes and throat. About 130 adults with severe forms of the disease will be randomly assigned to receive either rituximab (an infusion) or cyclophosphamide (a pill), to see which one leads to more complete remissions and fewer side effects. The goal is to find a more effective treatment to prevent the blindness and life-threatening complications this disease can cause.
