European researchers probe genetic roots of blinding eye bulge in nearsighted people

NCT ID NCT06949579

First seen Feb 05, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study looks at why some people with severe nearsightedness develop a bulge at the back of the eye called posterior staphyloma, which can harm vision. Researchers will collect blood samples and eye images from 600 adults in France, the Netherlands, and Spain to find genetic and protein differences. The goal is to better understand this condition, not to test a new treatment.
