New study aims to predict breathing problems in tiniest preemies

NCT ID NCT07186790

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study will observe 160 very premature babies (born before 32 weeks and weighing under 1,500 grams) to find out why some fail non-invasive breathing support like CPAP. The goal is to identify risk factors that lead to needing a breathing tube. This is an observational study, so no new treatment is being tested, but the findings could help doctors make better decisions for these fragile infants.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify which preterm babies are at risk of breathing support failure, leading to earlier and better treatment decisions.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly test any new therapy. Results may not apply to all hospitals or populations.
