Antibiotic tested to clear 'Liver brain Fog'

NCT ID NCT04244877

Summary

This study aimed to see if the antibiotic rifaximin could improve subtle thinking problems (covert hepatic encephalopathy) in people with liver cirrhosis, especially when those problems are linked to an overgrowth of gut bacteria. The plan was to treat about 40 patients for eight weeks and measure changes in their brain function tests and gut motility. The trial was withdrawn before any participants were enrolled.
