New study paves way for potential breakthrough in deadly newborn gut disease

NCT ID NCT05279664

First seen Feb 03, 2026 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study looks at whether it's possible to run a large trial testing a treatment called remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe gut disease in newborns. RIC involves brief cycles of cutting off and restoring blood flow to a limb to protect the gut. The study will enroll 78 babies with NEC to see if doctors can successfully recruit, randomize, and mask the treatment. It does not aim to prove the treatment works, but to set the stage for a future effectiveness trial.
