Reused heart catheters could slash medical waste and costs

NCT ID NCT07389434

First seen Feb 05, 2026 · Last updated May 02, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study looks at whether re-sterilized catheters are as safe and effective as new ones for a common heart procedure called pulmonary vein isolation, used to treat atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). About 200 adults scheduled for this procedure will be randomly assigned to receive either a new or a re-sterilized catheter. The researchers will compare procedure time, safety, cost, and environmental impact. If successful, this could make heart procedures more affordable and eco-friendly without compromising patient care.
