Feeding tube removal after breathing tube: a simple change that could speed recovery

NCT ID NCT05795569

First seen Jan 03, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study looked at whether taking out the nasogastric feeding tube right after a breathing tube is removed helps ICU patients start eating by mouth sooner. Swallowing problems are common after ICU stays, and the feeding tube itself may make things worse. The trial involved 112 adults who had been on a breathing machine for more than 48 hours. Researchers compared early tube removal to standard care to see if it reduced pneumonia and sped up eating recovery.
