Sip till surgery: new study challenges old fasting rules

NCT ID NCT07488468

First seen Mar 23, 2026 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests a simple change: letting patients drink clear liquids (like water or apple juice) right up until they are called to the operating room, instead of making them stop hours earlier. Researchers will compare fasting times and outcomes like nausea, vomiting, and recovery room stays before and after this new policy is put in place. The goal is to see if shorter fasting improves comfort and reduces complications for the 1,000 adults having elective surgery.
