VA tests virtual program to curb opioid dependence after surgery

Summary
This study is testing whether a special telehealth pain management service can help Veterans safely reduce their use of opioid painkillers after orthopedic surgery. The program provides personalized support and coordination before and after surgery for Veterans at risk of long-term opioid use. Researchers will compare outcomes for 400 Veterans who receive this telehealth service versus standard care after surgery at non-VA hospitals.
