New test could spare fragile preemies from unneeded antibiotics

NCT ID NCT06100614

Summary

This study aims to see if a new blood test (for a marker called presepsin) can help doctors safely give fewer antibiotics to very premature babies right after birth. Currently, most of these babies get antibiotics because of infection risk, but very few actually have one. The trial will enroll about 900 babies to see if using the test can cut unnecessary antibiotic use by at least 30% without increasing the risk of missing a real infection.
