Real-Time tissue check may spare rectal cancer patients from extensive surgery
NCT ID NCT07337811
First seen Jan 15, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study tests a strategy for people with low rectal cancer who have had radiation therapy. During surgery, a piece of the tumor is removed and immediately checked under a microscope. If the cancer is only in the surface layer, no further surgery is needed. If it is deeper, the surgeon completes a more extensive operation. The goal is to see if this approach can keep the cancer from coming back while reducing side effects like the need for a permanent colostomy bag or bowel and sexual problems. About 27 adults will take part.
