New hope to avoid colostomy bags: triple therapy tested for rectal cancer

NCT ID NCT05215379

Summary

This study tested whether adding immunotherapy to standard chemotherapy and radiation before surgery could improve outcomes for people with a specific type of ultra-low rectal cancer. The goal was to shrink tumors enough so surgeons could avoid removing the anus, allowing patients to avoid a permanent colostomy bag. Researchers compared the new combination to the standard treatment in 201 patients to see if it led to more complete tumor disappearance and better organ preservation.
