Radiation breakthrough could let rectal cancer patients skip surgery, keep their rectum
NCT ID NCT02505750
Summary
This study is testing whether a specific type of internal radiation boost (called CXB) given after standard chemo-radiation is better than an external radiation boost at helping patients with early rectal cancer avoid major surgery that removes the rectum or requires a permanent colostomy bag. The goal is to preserve the rectum and its function, which is especially important for older patients who may not be good candidates for major surgery. Researchers are comparing these two approaches in 148 patients across multiple centers to see which one leads to more patients keeping their rectum without the cancer coming back.
