New Lab-Grown albumin could ease fluid swelling in liver patients
NCT ID NCT05249374
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-phase trial tested a lab-made version of human serum albumin (r-HSA) in 36 people with cirrhosis and ascites (fluid buildup in the belly). The goal was to check safety, how the body processes the drug, and whether it might help. Participants received one of three doses of r-HSA or standard albumin. Results will show if this new option is safe enough to study further.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Recombinant human serum albumin (r-HSA)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safer or more reliable alternative to standard albumin for managing fluid buildup in cirrhosis patients.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 1 trial with only 36 participants, so safety and effectiveness are not yet proven. The drug may not work better than existing treatments or could have unexpected side effects.
