New scan could reveal hidden heart damage from cancer radiation
NCT ID NCT06373497
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study will test whether a special PET/MRI scan can detect real-time artery inflammation in the heart after chest radiation therapy. Ten adults with stage II-III or limited stage IV cancer who are at high risk for heart problems will be scanned before and 6 months after radiation. The goal is to see if this imaging method is feasible for spotting early signs of heart damage.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to better ways to monitor and predict heart damage from chest radiation in cancer patients.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It is designed to test feasibility, not to prove a treatment works.
