Blood test may predict COVID-19 ICU outcomes

NCT ID NCT07244731

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study explored whether a routine blood test called RDW (red blood cell distribution width) can help predict how severe COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit will fare. Researchers looked at 146 adults with severe or critical COVID-19 to see if higher RDW levels were linked to needing a breathing tube or dying. The goal was to find a simple tool to guide treatment decisions, not to test a new treatment.
