First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a rapid 30-minute desktop test for gonorrhea and chlamydia could help doctors make better treatment decisions compared to the current standard (a gram stain). 98 adults with symptoms of urethritis or cervicitis took part. The goal was to see if the rapid test reduced unnecessary antibiotic use and shortened clinic visits.

Active substance

Rapid 30-minute desktop diagnostic test

What this could lead to

If successful, this rapid test could help doctors prescribe the right antibiotics faster, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use and improving patient care.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 98 participants, so results may not apply to all clinics. The test's accuracy and impact need further validation in larger trials.
