15-Minute MRI could spot hidden cancers in BRCA carriers
NCT ID NCT02462460
First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026
Summary
This study tests a rapid MRI scan that takes about 15 minutes to image the pancreas and ovaries, compared to the usual 30-45 minutes per organ. The goal is to see if this faster scan can produce high-quality images that could one day be used to screen for pancreatic and ovarian cancers in people with BRCA mutations. Participants are BRCA carriers aged 30 and older who are already scheduled for a screening breast MRI. The researchers will compare different MRI techniques to find the best balance of speed and image quality.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a quick, 15-minute MRI screening tool for pancreatic and ovarian cancers in people with BRCA mutations, potentially catching cancers earlier.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study focused on image quality, not on detecting cancer directly. The technique may not prove accurate enough for widespread screening.
