New radiation combo may help older patients avoid rectal cancer surgery

Summary

This study tests a combination of external beam radiotherapy and internal high-dose-rate brachytherapy for elderly or frail patients with rectal cancer who cannot have or refuse surgery. The goal is to achieve a complete or near-complete response within 12 months and maintain it for two years, while also monitoring quality of life. About 80 participants aged 70 and older will be enrolled across multiple centers in Germany.
