New heart procedure aims to stop irregular heartbeat in its tracks

NCT ID NCT05986526

First seen Apr 18, 2026 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests if adding extra ablation to the standard procedure helps people with persistent atrial fibrillation (a long-lasting irregular heartbeat) stay in normal rhythm. About 206 adults will be randomly assigned to receive either standard pulmonary vein isolation or that plus posterior wall ablation, both using a newer, safer energy type. The goal is to see which approach better prevents heart rhythm problems over one year.
