Could your own blood heal a stubborn eye ulcer?
NCT ID NCT03653650
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether eye drops made from a patient's own blood (platelet-rich plasma) can heal persistent corneal ulcers faster than standard lubricants. 54 adults with ulcers that haven't healed after two weeks will be randomly assigned to one of three treatments. The goal is to see which approach heals the ulcer in the fewest days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) eye drops
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a faster healing option for stubborn corneal ulcers that don't respond to standard eye drops.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 54 people. The ulcer may still worsen or perforate despite treatment, and PRP is not yet proven better than existing options.
