New genetic score could spot ovarian cancer risk earlier
NCT ID NCT06935344
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether a polygenic risk score (PRS) — a calculation based on many small genetic variations — can help predict a woman's chance of developing ovarian cancer. Researchers will compare the PRS of 1,300 Italian women, half with ovarian cancer and half without. Participants also provide blood samples and answer lifestyle questions. The goal is to see if adding PRS to known risk factors improves prediction.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to better ways to identify women at high risk for ovarian cancer, allowing for earlier monitoring or prevention.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The polygenic risk score may not prove accurate enough to change clinical practice, and results may not apply to other populations.
