Brain surgery drug interaction under the microscope

NCT ID NCT06884657

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at how the drug mannitol changes levels of the anesthetic propofol in the blood and urine during brain surgery. Forty adults having either supratentorial tumor surgery or pituitary surgery will be enrolled. Half will receive mannitol, the other half a placebo, and propofol levels will be measured to see if mannitol affects anesthesia.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
mannitol
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors adjust anesthesia doses more precisely when mannitol is used during brain surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 40 participants. It measures drug levels, not patient outcomes, so direct benefits are uncertain.
