Gut bacteria vs. ICU pneumonia: can a simple supplement save lives?

Summary
This study is testing whether giving probiotic supplements can prevent a dangerous type of pneumonia that patients sometimes develop while on a breathing machine in the intensive care unit (ICU). It will enroll 186 adults who are on a ventilator after a severe head injury, stroke, or brain hemorrhage. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either the probiotic or a placebo to see if the treatment reduces the rate of pneumonia and death.
