Gut bugs tested to soothe troubled bellies
NCT ID NCT04760353
Summary
This study tested whether taking a specific mix of probiotic supplements for 8 weeks could help relieve the painful symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in adults who also have obesity. Researchers enrolled 80 participants to see if the probiotics provided 'adequate relief' from IBS discomfort and if they caused changes in the participants' gut bacteria. The study was carefully designed so neither participants nor doctors knew who was receiving the real probiotic mix versus a placebo.
