Friendly bacteria vs. painful mouth sores: can a simple lozenges ease cancer treatment side effects?

NCT ID NCT06285591

Summary

This study tested whether a probiotic lozenge containing Lactobacillus reuteri could help prevent or reduce severe mouth sores in people receiving radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. 160 participants were randomly assigned to suck on either the probiotic or a placebo lozenge twice daily during their treatment. Researchers compared the two groups to see if the probiotic was safe and effective at lowering the rate and severity of this painful side effect.
