Could your phone camera replace blood tests? new study explores
NCT ID NCT05582902
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study follows 60 people with lower-risk myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) who need regular red blood cell transfusions. Over 6 months, participants use a smartphone app to answer weekly quality-of-life questions and take photos of their fingernails or eyelids. Researchers aim to see if those photos can help estimate hemoglobin levels, potentially leading to a non-invasive way to monitor anemia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help develop a smartphone-based tool to estimate hemoglobin levels from photos, potentially reducing the need for blood draws.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not testing a new treatment. The app-based hemoglobin estimation is exploratory and may not prove accurate enough for clinical use.
