School nurses take on heart disease: 6,000 kids in prevention trial
NCT ID NCT06720272
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether placing trained nurses in schools can prevent rheumatic heart disease in children aged 5 to 16 in Nepal and Zambia. The nurses will teach about the disease, check for strep throat, and help kids get antibiotics. The study will measure if this approach lowers the number of children with heart damage from untreated strep infections.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
school-nurse program (education, screening, and antibiotic access)
What this could lead to
If successful, this program could become a low-cost way to prevent rheumatic heart disease in children living in high-risk areas.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial, but results depend on real-world school implementation. The program may not reduce disease as much as hoped, and long-term follow-up is needed.
