Pump up your brain before bypass: study tests Pre-Surgery training to ward off delirium

NCT ID NCT04493996

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether doing simple, home-based brain exercises for a few weeks before heart surgery can help prevent postoperative delirium (sudden confusion) and long-term memory problems. Researchers will enroll 100 adults scheduled for elective heart surgery. Half will do the cognitive training; the other half will receive standard care. The goal is to see if building up 'cognitive reserve' beforehand protects the brain during and after surgery.
