New study tests two programs to stop child abuse before it starts
NCT ID NCT06732310
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether two behavioral programs—one during pregnancy and one in early childhood—can prevent child maltreatment and reduce the effects of intimate partner violence. About 600 pregnant women exposed to violence will be randomly assigned to receive one or both programs. Researchers will track child abuse reports, parenting behaviors, and family well-being over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
behavioral programs (Pregnant Moms' Empowerment Program and Reminiscing and Emotion Training)
What this could lead to
If successful, these programs could offer a cost-effective way to prevent child abuse and reduce harm from intimate partner violence in at-risk families.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 2 trial with 600 participants, so results are still early. The programs may not work for all families, and long-term effects are unknown.
