Liver shunt brain fog: can a common pill block it?

NCT ID NCT07273734

Summary

This study tests if adding ursodeoxycholic acid (a bile acid pill) to the standard laxative treatment (lactulose) can better prevent brain fog (hepatic encephalopathy) after a liver shunt procedure (TIPS). It will involve 270 adults with severe liver cirrhosis who are getting the shunt. The goal is to see if the combination treatment lowers the chance of developing serious confusion and thinking problems in the first three months after surgery.
