Smartphone program aims to stop devastating birth defects in native communities

NCT ID NCT04376346

Summary

This study tested whether a culturally adapted mobile app could help young American Indian and Alaska Native women prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies, which can cause lifelong disabilities in babies. Researchers recruited 439 women aged 16-20 from urban areas across the U.S. through social media and delivered the prevention program via smartphones. The program aimed to reduce alcohol use and increase effective contraception to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
