New drug combo may shield heart surgery patients from dangerous rhythm

NCT ID NCT02750319

First seen May 19, 2026 · Last updated May 19, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) to the standard drug amiodarone can better prevent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat) in people at high risk after major chest surgery. About 184 adults undergoing lung or esophagus surgery will receive either the combo or amiodarone alone. The goal is to see if the combo reduces episodes of sustained or serious irregular heartbeat within the first week after surgery.
