Simple NICU routine may boost preemie feeding and language
NCT ID NCT05861531
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether combining gentle mouth exercises with extra talking and reading in the NICU helps preterm infants (born 23-30 weeks) learn to feed by mouth and develop language skills. Researchers will track how quickly babies start and complete oral feeding, and measure adult words and conversations using a recording device. The goal is to see if this simple, non-drug approach improves outcomes for these vulnerable infants.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a simple, non-drug way to help preterm infants feed earlier and improve their language development.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage behavioral study with no drug or device, so results may be modest or not generalizable. The outcomes are observational and may not lead to a clear treatment.
