New study aims to predict surgery type for lung infection patients

NCT ID NCT07188714

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at 95 adults with complicated parapneumonic effusion (a lung infection with fluid buildup) to see if doctors can predict which surgical technique is needed: a simpler cleaning (debridement) or a more extensive peel removal (decortication). Researchers will use a scoring system (RAPID score) and ultrasound before surgery to guide the choice. The goal is to improve recovery times and reduce hospital stays.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

VATS decortication or debridement (surgical procedure)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors choose the right surgical approach for each patient, potentially reducing hospital stays and improving recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage observational study (95 participants) that only predicts surgical needs, not a treatment itself. Results may not apply to all patients.
