Balloon vs stent: new study aims to improve heart artery treatment

NCT ID NCT07277114

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study looks at two ways to treat severe calcium buildup in heart arteries. About 656 adults with hardened arteries will first get a procedure to break up the calcium, then be randomly assigned to receive either a drug-coated balloon or a drug-eluting stent. Researchers will track heart-related events like heart attack or stroke for one year to see if the balloon works as well as the stent.
