Can a clip fix a leaky heart valve without open surgery?
NCT ID NCT07741253
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether a catheter-based procedure called transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) can improve outcomes in people with atrial functional mitral regurgitation, a condition where the heart's left atrium enlarges and causes the mitral valve to leak. The study will enroll 182 adults with moderate-to-severe or severe leakage who are at high risk for surgery. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either TEER plus standard medication or medication alone, and will be followed for 12 months to compare rates of death and heart failure hospitalizations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), a catheter-based procedure that clips the mitral valve leaflets together to reduce leakage
- What this could lead to
- If TEER proves effective, it could offer a new treatment option for people with atrial functional mitral regurgitation who are too high-risk for surgery, potentially reducing deaths and heart failure hospitalizations.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is relatively small and early, and TEER is an invasive procedure with risks like device complications or infection. It may not provide clear benefit over medication alone, and results may not apply to all patients.
