Recycling bypass blood may cut transfusion needs in heart surgery

NCT ID NCT06824753

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study looked at 60 adults having planned heart bypass surgery. Half received their own leftover blood from the heart-lung machine after surgery, while the other half did not. Researchers measured how many red blood cell transfusions were needed and checked blood clotting with a special test (ROTEM). The goal was to see if returning this blood could safely reduce the need for donor blood transfusions.
