Can a breathing mask keep severely obese patients off the ventilator?

Summary
This study looks at whether using noninvasive breathing support right after removing the breathing tube can help severely obese patients avoid needing the tube again. About 20% of these patients currently require re-intubation, which raises risks of pneumonia, longer hospital stays, and death. The trial will enroll 250 adults with a BMI of 40 or higher who have been on a ventilator for at least 24 hours.
