ICU survivors: new study tracks lingering health problems years later

NCT ID NCT06857513

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at patients who needed a breathing machine for more than 48 hours in the ICU between 2021 and 2023. Researchers will interview 90 adults in 2025 to see if they still have physical, mental, or thinking problems (called post-ICU syndrome) and how it affects their quality of life. The goal is to learn how these issues change over time and what factors make them worse.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors understand how post-ICU syndrome changes over time and identify risk factors, leading to better follow-up care for survivors.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study with only 90 participants, so findings may not apply to all ICU patients. It relies on questionnaires and cannot prove cause and effect.
